Creative Research

There isn’t anything in particular that immediately inspired my project other than the given theme “creativity in crisis”. I  knew I wanted to do something very dark and convey agony and despair. While including an element of hope and light; the creativity isn’t quite lost yet. Upon reflection for inspiration, I came up with a few works that possess the theme of crisis and despair. “The Scream” by Evard Munch and Picasso’s “The Old Guitarists” are two paintings I thought of when looking for inspiration. Both a part of the Expressionist movement, they serve as good inspiration for capturing emotions and feelings (which is what the movement was all about!).

I’ve also found inspiration with the Surrealist movement. I’d like to include an element that evokes discomfort. The element in question is something I’ll only truly be able to figure out once I start painting. I’ve found Frida Kahlo particularly inspiring in relation to this movement. Her work mainly consists of self portraits which ties with what I want to do for my project. I plan on painting a portrait of no one in particular (but it’ll probably be based on my face since I have constant access to it). I’ll be using Kahlo's work as inspiration to come up with slight elements of unease that I can apply to my own painting.
